Leaders of Czech modern music theory and his critical activities

Miloš Hons

Basics of Czech modern music theory were pitched in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century by Otakar Šín and Alois Hába. These developments culminated in the synthetic work on the younger generation Karel Janeček. Alois Hába (1893-1973) developed in the twenties and thirties wide compositional, pedagogical, theoretical and critical activity. Against domestic traditionalist oriented musical criticis he had strenuously defend his own compositional style. Otakar Šín (1881-1934) was devoted to music criticis only sporadically. Fully focused on harmony as his main area of theoretical interest, and therefore in its scientific reference only find this type of writings. Karel Janeček (1903-1974) began publishing the first theoretical study already in the twenties. Besides a lot of purely theoretical studies there are the most important part about works of Bedřich Smetana.
